A Missing African Peace? Peace Thinking and Anti-War Activism in Interwar Colonial West Africa
Overarching project: Peace Movements & Decolonisation
Leiden University
Supervisors: Carolien Stolte & Walter Nkwi Gam
The advent of peace activism in Africa is usually placed after the Second World War, the most famous example being the anti-nuclear World Without the Bomb Assembly in Accra in 1962. My research will try to expand our understanding of peace activism in Africa, by highlighting peace and antiwar thinking in colonial West Africa. Through highlighting connections between pan-African thinkers and European pacifists, as well as peace activism in interwar West Africa, this research will shed light on the origins of African anti-war organizing.
